Prefecture Birds was developed in response to a Japanese exhibition context centered on gold.
The series draws on birds associated with Japan’s prefectural symbolism, approached not as cultural illustration, but as reduced and concentrated forms through which stillness, restraint, and psychological presence are explored.
Executed in ink with restrained applications of acrylic gold, the works rely on line to establish posture and contour, while layered tonal washes introduce depth and quiet tension. Gold functions as a spatial element — framing distance, pause, and attention rather than decoration.
Informed by extended travel across Japan, the series reflects an attempt to locate stillness not as escape, but as a deliberate and attentive response to complexity.
