Hippo

A study of submersion and surface tension; present and hidden at once.

Year 2024Wild Inksanimal

The hippo is held at the threshold of visibility, only the head breaking the surface. Water becomes a thin skin between interior and exterior, turning the animal into a submerged mass felt more than seen.

Layered greys separate the leathery head from the dissolving water, keeping contrast low so the bulk reads as calm weight. Presence comes from subtle ripples and the sense of volume beneath the surface rather than overt detail.
